Between Languages

A visual exploration of bilingual identity and childhood in migration

Between Languages is an ongoing documentary project exploring the lives of Russian children growing up in Dubai and attending a Saturday weekend school. Raised between cultures, climates, and languages, these children navigate a complex sense of belonging. During the week, they live in English and Arabic. On Saturdays, they return to Russian — not only as a language, but as a cultural memory carried by their families. The project observes how identity is negotiated in migration. In classrooms far from their parents’ homeland, children inherit stories, literature, and traditions that exist outside the city surrounding them. Rather than focusing on nostalgia, the series examines adaptation, resilience, and the quiet persistence of cultural roots within a globalized environment. Ongoing since 2026.
